Planning and Development

Message from Councillor Jan Harder, Chair of Planning Committee

This fall is going to be a very busy one for the Planning, Infrastructure and Economic Development Department and Planning Committee. Two major themes capture most of the work being completed— ensuring the best use of land and capitalizing on light rail investment.

Theme one: Best use of city lands

The City will ensure that the right lands are designated for economic development, in the right place to allow for new development that fits our neighbourhoods. The City is working towards resolving outstanding Ontario Municipal Board appeals of the Official Plan. This work includes the Employment Land Review (an information session is being held on September 29), a Land Evaluation Area Review (LEAR) and an adjustment in the City's planning horizon to 2036 with new growth projections for jobs, housing and population. These three things will cumulate with an Official Plan Amendment 150 report for consideration by Committee and Council later this year.

Theme two: Capitalizing on light rail investment

This theme transcends land use planning and includes the Public Works and Environmental Services Department, the Transportation Services Department, and the city as a whole. In the Planning, Infrastructure and Economic Development Department, this means encouraging uptake on transit-oriented development. To capitalize on the City's significant investment in infrastructure, Council has set the stage for intensified land development along light rail corridors. As a result, the development industry is responding with exciting applications around the Westboro, Bayview and Cleary Stations. Stay tuned for more as the City is transformed!

Jobs, population, and housing: future forecasting to 2036

Ever wonder what Ottawa will be like in 2036?

According to a recent report, Ottawa has more land set aside for employment than it needs. Combined with about-to-be-released growth projections for housing, population, and jobs, residents may live, work and play very differently in 2036 than 2016. Interested? Attend our upcoming information session:

Thursday, September 29, 2016
6:30 to 8 p.m., presentations at 7 p.m.
Ottawa City Hall, Main floor,
