Park-ticipate 2018 July 3 to August 24, 2018

Park-ticipate is a free drop-in program offered by City of Ottawa summer staff where children aged 4 to 10 are welcome to participate in crafts, games and sports offered at various local, rural and urban parks throughout Ottawa’s East end. It’s a fun and budget friendly way to get out and have some fun with your local community!

Don’t worry, there’s still time to register for one of our many summer camps. Summer camp registration continues all the way through the summer. We’ve got Basketball Above The Rim, Ottawa Adventure, Computer 3D Maker, Karate Camp and even Pottery and Dance. There’s something for everyone!

Each week, we’ll feature a selection of City-run summer camps, classes or courses to get you excited about all the fun activities happening in Ottawa! Check it out on Facebook.

Community galleries

Don’t miss your chance to take in the original work of local artists featured at The Trinity and Atrium Art Galleries, located in Ottawa’s east and west end respectively. Those sharing a reverence and admiration for the beauty of the natural world will find themselves at home in the works of Yulia Listisyna and Luminita Serbanescu. Both artists’ work feature abstracted impressionistic depictions of scenes from nature and their lives. Also featured is the contrasting work of Marc Gagné whose mixed media industrial pieces play on an abstract perspective of urban life and textures.

Lansdowne

613Flea is on for July 7 and is, without question, the best place to find an eclectic spread of vintage goods, independent boutiques, antiques dealers and more. Along with 613Flea, the Ottawa Farmers’ Market is happening every Sunday throughout the summer and is one of our favourite places to get the best in local fresh produce. And when we say local, we mean local. Everything sold at this producer-only farmers’ market is grown, made or baked within 100 kms of Ottawa. Best of all - it’s free to attend both of these stellar markets.

City Hall is a people place

  • Indigenous Walks - Take this opportunity to walk through downtown Ottawa and explore the landscape, architecture, art and monuments through an Indigenous perspective.
  • MoveCamp - We are on a mission to get people moving in an inclusive and judgment free environment for all skill and fitness levels.
  • Salsa with Dancing Mama - Don’t miss this chance to enjoy the rhythmic movement and playfulness of getting your heart rate up with the best dance partner in the world- your baby!
  • Join us at The Shenkman Arts Centre for a weekly dose of fun at our Lunchtime Summer Series. These free concerts will take place at 12:30 every Thursday in July and August. The performances will be outside the Centre in the Agora (or in the upper lobby if there is rain) and will present a wonderfully diverse selection of local artists and performers. Presented in partnership with The Heart of Orléans BIA.

Big Band Dances

You feel it as you walk down the street on your way to work in the morning. The beat of the streets, the melody of the traffic. It’s time let lose and dance! The Big Band Dance is back, and you’re invited. So polish up your dancing shoes, brush your teeth and head on down to Ron Kolbus Lakeside Centre to be greeted by the good time swing dancing stylings of The Starlighters. It’s a night you won’t want to miss!

Beaches

Beaches are open, lifeguards are on duty and the water quality is being monitored seven days a week. If you want to stay in the know about beaches and water quality before you head out to one of our many beach locations give us a follow @ottawahealth. That said, let’s get out there and live like we’re on a Bahama beach dream vacation and lounge it up!

How's our French

We want to know more about your experiences with our French programing. Therefore, The Recreation Culture and Facility Department is launching a french survey to enhance the quality of our Francophone Programs. Please take a few minutes to share your comments and suggestions with us.

Here's what we're excited about for July

The Discover Rec team lives in and loves Ottawa as much as the next person. When we asked the team what they were looking forward to in July they said:

“As June comes to an end I start looking forward to our family’s annual Canada Day walkabout downtown. It’s a great chance to see Ottawans celebrating and to be a tourist in your own city”
               -Laura

“Of all the “days” – you know, like New Years, St Paddies, Victoria, etc. – I like Canada Day the most. Ottawa becomes the place to be for both those who live here and pals visiting from afar, as sites across the City act as hubs for people dressed in red or emblazoned with the maple leaf. Mix in a BBQ, free busses and some fireworks and you have yourself a real time.”
                 -Dan

“Every year we register to play in the HOPE Beach Volley tournament. It’s pretty cool that our city has the largest outdoor volley ball tournament in North America! Plus an amazing party at the end the day!”
                 -Sam
