Project Update

Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST)

The Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) project will help protect the Ottawa River for future generations. Read on to find out how construction is progressing.

Construction Sites On Your Radar

The map below identifies construction sites for the CSST project within the City of Ottawa. Construction has either started or activities are imminent at the sites indicated in green. The red dots indicate future construction sites. Site 7, identified with the grey dot, was eliminated during the design phase of the project.
Tunneling activities are anticipated to start mid-2017.
Read on for information regarding the project sites that are currently active.
Map of the CSST sites numbers 1 to 10. Sites 3a, 5 and 10 are green, site 7 is grey and all other sites are red.

Site 3a: Rideau Canal Interceptor Diversion/Drop – Confederation Park

Some construction activities will take place in Confederation Park from the end of September to mid-December 2016 to prepare the site for the construction of the Rideau Canal Interceptor Diversion Chamber. Once the CSST is operational, this chamber will re-direct flows from the Rideau Canal Interceptor to the CSST, reducing overflows going directly into the Ottawa River.
These advance construction activities in 2016 will include pressure grouting (drilling small holes into the ground and filling them with grout) to seal the rock and reduce groundwater inflow during construction. Temporary hoarding (construction fencing) will be installed, the adjacent roadway and multi-use pathway may be realigned, and a small number of trees removed. Appropriate signage will be installed on the roadway and multi-use pathway.
Further to this work, the site will be re-instated for full use in 2017, and construction will resume in 2018.

Site 5: East West Tunnel Outlet/Rideau River Collector Diversion – New Edinburgh Park

While the contractor will be on site for a short duration this fall to undertake some preparatory work, construction activities in New Edinburgh/Stanley Park will begin in summer 2017. To prepare for construction and understand the impacts to the park, neighboring residents and businesses are invited to join the project team for an Information Session this fall:
When: Thursday, October 27, 2016 from 7:30pm to 9:00pm (immediately following the New Edinburgh Community Association Annual General Meeting)
Where: St. Bartholomew's Church, 125 MacKay Street

Site 10: Chamberlain Shaft – Kent and Chamberlain Street

Initial mobilization activities are underway, including the installation of hoarding around the site. Some drilling activities and pressure grouting are anticipated to begin within the next couple of weeks.
