Planning and Development

Ottawa is changing before our eyes...

The Ottawa Citizen recently interviewed Mayor Jim Watson and city planning staff for the article Ottawa is changing before our eyes: As we hit Canada's 150th, where is the capital going? Building Better and Smarter Suburbs to make the suburbs healthier places and rethinking how we build streets in a more "complete street" fashion will improve the way residents move, work and play. From the LRT effect to revitalizing Sparks, inside the Greenbelt development such as Lebreton Flats and Zibi, Tunney's, Booth Street lands and reimagining city-wide shopping destinations, the face and fabric of the city is slated for change.

Our e-newsletter team looks forward to this exciting period of growth and covering planning and development news for you.

Ottawa.ca gets a rebuild and new planning info is online

The City has revised its Planning and Development section on ottawa.ca.

Here's a preview of a new section called,  Development information for residents.

The Province of Ontario establishes the ground rules for land use planning through the Planning Act.  Municipalities are given all of their powers and authority to act by the province.  The Planning Act is used in most development applications while the Municipal Act governs matters such as street openings, street closings and street name changes.

The City, at the direction of the Planning Act, creates an overall master-planning document called the Official Plan. The Zoning By-law is a companion document and a key tool in the implementation of the Official Plan.

Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST)

The Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) is one of the most important projects of the Ottawa River Action Plan (ORAP), which is the City of Ottawa's roadmap to protect the Ottawa River for future generations.

The CSST will greatly reduce the frequency of sewage overflows during storms from entering the Ottawa River, and will help protect the river. These tunnels will hold up to 43,000 m3 of sewer overflow during major rainfalls, the equivalent capacity of approximately 18 Olympic sized pools. Once rainfall has subsided, this water will then be treated and returned safely to the Ottawa River.

Sign up to the Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) E-newsletter on www.ottawa.ca/esubscriptions to receive regular updates on the project.
