Project Update: Montreal Road Revitalization

The City of Ottawa is undertaking the design and construction for the Montreal Road Revitalization project from North River Road to St. Laurent Boulevard. The vision for Montreal Road is to construct a vibrant and welcoming main street with a well-balanced transportation network that will allow residents and businesses to thrive.

The project limits are available in the
Key Plan.

Public Information Session

There will be a Montreal Road Public Information Session held in early 2019. This session will provide the opportunity to learn more about the project design, landscaping plans and provide feedback. The project team will be available to discuss and answer questions.

Stay tuned! More details will be shared when available.

Project update

This project is currently in detailed design and construction is expected to start in spring 2019. The anticipated completion for the project is fall 2021.

Over the last month, the Montreal Road project team undertook additional traffic modeling of the Montreal Road corridor between North River Road and St. Laurent Boulevard. The traffic modeling is used to simulate the traffic along the new 3-lane Montreal Road corridor between the Vanier Parkway and St. Laurent Boulevard. It uses software that provides a prediction of bus and car travel times as well as vehicle queues that will be used to refine the design of right and left turn lanes at the Montreal Road intersections.

Discussions are taking place on the possible options for cycling facilities, including a refinement of the cycle track design, proposed signage and pavement markings.

There is a Montreal Road working group, which includes residents, business owners, the community association as well as representatives from Citizens for Safe Cycling. As part of our engagement, the project team meets regularly to discuss, review options and collect feedback. This month, the working group discussions were focused on the cycling facilities between North River Road and the Vanier Parkway, as well as public art.

Public art

Development of the Vanier/Montreal Road Public Art Plan is well underway with valuable input from people who live in, work in and care about the community.
Over the month of November, the public art team held initial interviews with several community stakeholders in order to find out the priorities, challenges and opportunities for public art.

At the November working group meeting, ART+PUBLIC UnLtd’s Rebecca Carbin presented an illustrated introduction to the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE and WHY? of public art, and recorded great insights from attendees about their desires for public art plans and projects in the neighbourhood.

Next steps for project

  • Continue with the refinement of intersection designs including location of signals, pavement markings and signage
  • Continue with the development of the Public Art Plan:
    • In December, the public art team will be reviewing the information gathered so far and will develop a series of three community focus groups/workshops which will be designed to go deeper into discussion with community members. These workshops will take place in January, in partnership with local community hubs. The art team will want input, so stay tuned for information on dates and locations that will be posted on the Vision Vanier webpage in the near future.
  • Next meeting with the Montreal Road Working Group in January to discuss the proposed intersection designs along Montreal Road
  • Public Information Session in early 2019
