Project update: Montreal Road Revitalization

The City of Ottawa is undertaking the design and construction for the Montreal Road Revitalization project from North River Road to St. Laurent Boulevard. The project also includes reconstruction of North River Road from Montreal Road to the North River Road cul-de-sac for a total distance of 560 metres length.

Key plan

The ultimate vision for Montreal Road is to construct a vibrant and welcoming main street with a well-balanced transportation network that will allow residents and businesses to thrive. To achieve this vision some of the following aboveground and underground improvements are proposed:

  • Construct a three-lane cross section between Vanier Parkway and St. Laurent Boulevard that includes two westbound lanes, one eastbound lane and cycling tracks in both directions
  • Implement streetscaping features along Montreal Road including but not limited to new street furniture, streetlights, trees, concrete sidewalks and paver stones
  • Review and improve bus stop and bus shelter locations
  • Replace the existing watermain between North River Road and St. Laurent Boulevard
  • Replace sanitary and storm sewers along certain sections of Montreal Road

The project limits for Montreal Road are North River Road to St. Laurent Boulevard for a total distance of 2 kilometres. In addition to the Montreal Road corridor, the project includes reconstruction of North River Road from Montreal Road to the North River Road cul-de-sac for a total distance of 560 metres length. The proposed works include replacement of the watermain, sanitary sewers and road drainage modifications.

Project update

This project is currently in detailed design and it is expected construction is expected to start in Spring 2019. The anticipated completion for the project is Fall 2021.

Over the last month, the Montreal Road project team has been focusing on the construction staging and traffic management strategy that will be required to complete the Montreal Road underground and surface works.  The proposed traffic management plans including proposed vehicle and transit detour routes are still under review; however, McArthur Avenue appears to be the most viable detour route during the construction period when Montreal Road is reduced to one lane between the Vanier Parkway and St Laurent Ave. The exact traffic management strategy, construction staging, lane closures and impacts to businesses will be finalized over the next month and presented at the 2nd Public Open House scheduled for early 2019.
